CJI defends Dinakaran

Chief Justice of Karnataka HC is facing impeachment proceedings.

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan has defended Justice PD Dinakaran, the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, who is facing impeachment proceedings for alleged corruption.

The CJI in an interview to a television channel said the land grabbing allegations against the judge had surfaced only after his name was suggested for elevation to the Supreme Court. “All these allegations have been raised when his name was suggested to be elevated,” said the CJI in the interview to a television channel.

When asked if he thought the impeachment proceeding in Parliament was a campaign to “vilify” Justice Dinakaran, he said: “It (the matter against Dinakaran) has now gone to impeachment proceedings. I don’t want to talk anything about the integrity or anything—he has to defend himself,” he said.
