City plans hero's welcome for Dhoni's Devils

MUMBAI: Even before Mumbai recovers from the hangover of Ganesh immersion procession, another showstopper awaits the city. But this time Mumbaikars won’t mind as they welcome the Twenty20 World Cup winners on Indian soil.

The cricket board and the state’s political machinery has planned a grand reception for Dhoni’s Devils on Wednesday morning. The Indian team will be given a rousing open top motorcade reception by citizens after it arrives in Mumbai from South Africa.

The squad, which defeated arch rivals Pakistan in Johannesburg in a nail-biting finish on Monday to lift the first Twenty20 cup, will travel in an open-topped bus from the airport to Wankhede Stadium, where a felicitation function for the players will be held by the BCCI.

Union Agriculture Minister and BCCI president Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and his deputy RR Patil will receive the team at the airport.

After a reception at the airport Dhoni’s boys would be taken in a 30-km long motorcade to the Wankhede Stadium. The players’ felicitation function will be held at around noon at the Wankhede Stadium lawns, BCCI sources said.

Meanwhile, following Jharkhand, Haryana and Karnataka governments the Maharashtra government too announced cash incentive of Rs 10 lakh each for city boys — Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma. "Maharashtra is proud of the performance of our boys. They have brought laurels to the state," Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said.

Earlier, other state governments too have declared similar awards to players from their respective states. In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, it was left to Agarkar and young Rohit Sharma to keep the city flag flying.
