CII elects Sunil Mittal as new prez

New Delhi: Bharti Enterprises chairman and group CEO Sunil Bharti Mittal has been elected as the president of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2007-08. Mr Mittal will assume office as the new CII president on May 25, taking over from Ashok Leyland MD R Seshasayee. Bharti Airtel is the world’s tenth largest company in terms of subscriber numbers and India’s most valuable telecom company.

Mr Mittal was CII’s vice-president during 2006-07 and is a member of the prime minister’s council on trade and industry. He serves on the boards of governors of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow and the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. ICICI Bank MD and CEO KV Kamath has been elected as the CII vice-president.

He is a member of the CII National Council, the Board of Directors of Visa International (Asia-Pacific) and on the governing boards of several leading educational institutions.
