CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and DMK President M Karunanidhi led a host of leaders today in extending greetings to the people on the eve of Christmas.

"On the happy occasion of Christmas, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my Christian brothers and sisters living in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and in other parts of the country", Rosaiah said in a release.

"May we on the Birthday of Lord Jesus Christ rededicate ourselves to promote Universal Brotherhood, spirit of service and resolve to lead a true and righteous life", he said.

Recalling the efforts taken by the AIADMK government, Jayalalithaa in her message said it was for the first time in the country that Christians from Tamil Nadu were given financial assistance to take up pilgrimage to Jerusalem, considered as holy city.

"I appeal people to follow Lord Jesus who preached love, compassion, simplicity. Let universal brotherhood be promoted on this special occasion and I extend my hearty Christmas Day greetings", Jayalalithaa said.

Karunanidhi, claiming that his party had been giving first preference to the welfare of the Christians, said, "DMK is the only party which continues to support the Christian fraternity and gave away several benefits to Christians".

PMK leader S Ramadoss and MDMK chief Vaiko were among others who also extended their Christmas greetings.

In neighbouring union territory of Puducherry, Lt Governor A K Singh, Chief Minister N Rangasamy several other leaders greeted the people.

Singh wished the festival which marked 'promotion of goodwill, compassion and love for all' brought in joy and prosperity in the lives of all the people of Puducherry.

Rangasamy in his message said the principles of love and compassion preached and practised by Jesus Christ were eternally valid and should be developed by all sections of people.
