NEW DELHI: Aljo K Joseph, who appeared as a lawyer for Christian Michel in Agusta Westland case, was made in-charge of the newly-formed legal cell of Indian Youth Congress just four months ago.

IYC sources told ET that the legal cell was formed to take cases of public interest and fight for the poor.

Joseph was made in-charge of the cell and it organised legal aid camps for the poor in Delhi.

A practicing lawyer, Joseph came in touch with Congress leader Dipak Babaria who introduced him to other party leaders and involved him in party work. “When I was general secretary in-charge of Kerala, youth from all walks of life met me,” Babaria told ET. “He was also one of them. He presented himself as an activist lawyer and showed his inclination to work for the party. As I always promote young people, I was promoting him also and involved him in issues related to Election Commission and the court for party issues in Madhya Pradesh.”

Babaria says he was also helping him in labour related cases in Gujarat and came across as a promising young person. “I had no idea of his personal cases and things he did in his personal capacity,” added Babaria.

On December 4, Joseph was also part of the Congress delegation which met the Election Commission to emphasize on security and fairness of the counting system in the current elections. The other Congress leaders in the delegation were MP Congress president Kamal Nath, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal and Vivek Tankha.
