'Chowkidar Narendra Modi': PM changes Twitter handle name to counter Rahul Gandhi's chor jibe

Weeks ahead of Lok Sabha elections and a day after launching "Main Bhi Chowkidar" campaign on Twitter , Prime Minister Narendra Modi today changed his personal Twitter account name to -- Chowkidar Narendra Modi. Following Prime Minister, BJP president and other BJP leaders also changed their profile names to Chowkidar Amit Shah, Chowkidar Piyush Goyal, etc.

The campaign has been launched to counter the Congress President Rahul Gandhi's "chowkidar chor hai" jibe against the Prime Minister. The party has launched the campaign as part of its strategy to turn the tables as it did in 2014 by aggressively countering former Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's "chaiwalla" jibe.



Congress president has been recently attacking Narendra Modi for allegedly doing corruption in Rafale deal and his closeness with some businessmen.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday launched a 'main bhi chowkidar' (I too am watchman) campaign and urged his supporters to take a pledge. He said he is not alone in the fight against graft and social evils.

"Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar," the prime minister wrote on Twitter.


The Prime Minister also shared a 3.45-minute video with the tweet titled "Take The Pledge", urging people to join Modi on March 31 at 6 pm for a video programme titled 'Main Bhi Chowkidar".

In the video, Modi called himself a watchman and said that he was not alone, in a counter to Congress President Rahul Gandhi's "chowkidar chor hai" jibe.


Following Modi's tweet, several BJP leaders also used the #MainBhiChowkidar hashtag and tweeted.
