Chiranjeevi backs Telangana demand
The proposal for the creation of Telangana got a big push on Friday when film actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi’s fledgling Praja Rajyam extended its backing to the creation of the new state.
While announcing his support to the statehood demand during the second day of the Telangana leg of his roadshow, the Praja Rajyam chief put the ball in the Centres court, making it clear that his party would not be a obstacle in the fulfilment of the long-standing demand.
It is for the central government to take a decision on creation of Telangana state. If it comes up with such a proposal, our party will not be an obstacle at any cost, he told a gathering at Jagityal in Karimnagar, the seat represented in the Lok Sabha by TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao.
The filmstar is the latest politician to board the Telangana bandwagon. His backing to the statehood cause came days after TDP chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu did a complete U-turn on the issue, giving up his opposition to the demand and turning into a Telangana proponent.
The BJP and the TRS, the other political players which have significant presence in the region, are already fighting for the cause.
