NEW DELHI: Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) is set to witness a generational shift with Ram Vilas Paswan planning to give his son Chirag Paswan charge of the party.

Senior Paswan on Tuesday made Chirag, currently the chairman of LJP parliamentary party, the incharge of Bihar unit. This is seen as a stopgap arrangement till Chirag is made the national president in November.

“The time has come for the new generation to take the party forward,” Ram Vilas Paswan told media persons in New Delhi.

Chirag will make his first address to the party as its chief at a rally in Patna on November 28.

LJP is yet to announce its candidate for the by-election to Samastipur Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant after the death of Ram Vilas’s younger brother Ram Chandra Paswan. Sources told ET that party has decided to field the deceased MP’s son Prince Raj from the constituency to keep the seat within the Paswan family.

Chirag became active in politics just before Lok Sabha polls in 2014, when LJP was part of the UPA.
