Hu Jintao made the promise in a message to Myamar's top leader, Senior-General Than Shwe, the official Xinhua News Agency said, while giving few specifics.
``As a friendly neighbor, China will provide help and aid to Myanmar's reconstruction efforts, Hu was quoted as saying in the message Xinhua said was sent on Monday.
Hu said he believed the country would ``soon overcome the difficulties caused by the cyclone and restore normal life for its people under the leadership of the SPDC,'' Xinhua said, referring to the State Peace and Development Council.
The type of aid wasn't specified and China's armed forces, despite their vast size, have limited capacity for quickly delivering relief supplies beyond the country's borders.
Myanmar's foreign minister told diplomats in Yangon on Monday that, overall, more than 10,000 people may have died when Cyclone Nargis struck Saturday.
The country's military regime, which has spurned the international community for decades, has made a rare appeal for urgent assistance from the international community in wake of the disaster.
China could be especially well placed to help because it is seen as friendly to the junta, refusing to criticize the generals during their bloody crackdown on last fall's pro-democracy uprising dubbed the ``Saffron Revolution'' after the color of the robes of monks who led nonviolent protests.
