China to build and launch Pakistan's first satellite

Pakistan proposes to build and launch its first communication satellite with Chinese help, in an apparent effort to catch up with its neighbours in the field of space technology.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan proposes to build and launch its first communication satellite with Chinese help, in an apparent effort to catch up with its neighbours in the field of space technology.

An agreement to launch Paksat-1R was signed during new Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to China, which concluded yesterday.

The launch of the satellite would form parts of efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between two allies, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told a news briefing here today.

The agreement between the China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) and Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission envisages building and launching of such a satellite.

CGWIC, the satellite's chief contractor, has said that a Long March 3B rocket will be used to put Paksat-1R into orbit in 2011. It will be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwestern Sichuan Province.

The company said ground control facilities for the satellite will be delivered to Pakistan after Paksat-1R enters orbit. CGWIC and its sub-contractors are responsible for the design, manufacture, final assembly, testing and launch of the satellite that will have a life span of 15 years.

Pakistan will use the satellite for domestic telecommunications and broadcast services. This is the third time China has delivered a satellite for another country. Last year, it build and launched two satellites for Nigeria.
