Beijing: China on Sunday revised from 7.8 to 8.0 the magnitude of the earthquake that struck the country in the deadliest form in generations leaving nearly 32,500 people dead and affecting millions.

The magnitude on the Richter Scale was revised upwards after specialists carried out "real time and detailed measurements" of the quake according to international practices, the China Seismological Bureau (CSB) said.

Chinese earthquake experts also referred to quake data given by other seismological observatories across the globe, official Xinhua news agency said quoting the bureau.

CSB's first report set the magnitude at 7.6, which was later revised to 7.8.

The US Geological Survey and Japan Meteorological Agency had said the magnitude of the quake was 7.9.

Buildings, bridges and public facilities have been damaged in an area of more than 100,000 sq kms by the temblor.

During his visit to the disaster zone, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao described the massive earthquake as "the biggest and most destructive natural disaster since new China was founded in 1949."

Wen said the quake was even more powerful than the Tangshan earthquake in 1976 in northern Hebei Province which claimed about 240,000 lives three decades ago.
