China launches 'patriotic education' campaign in Tibet

China has launched a two-month ``patriotic education'' drive in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa that will denounce the Dalai Lama and teach the public the government stance on riots there last month.

BEIJING: China has launched a two-month ``patriotic education'' drive in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa that will denounce the Dalai Lama and teach the public the government stance on riots there last month, a news report said Monday.

The campaign will cover Lhasa city and surrounding rural areas and focus on strengthening relations between local people and grass-roots Communist Party officials, the Tibet Daily, a Communist Party newspaper, reported. The drive aims to unify their thinking, ``deepen'' their struggle against independence forces, and hit back at the ``Dalai clique's splittist plots.''

China says the Dalai Lama wants to split Tibet from China and blames his supporters for instigating protests in Lhasa that turned violent March 14.

The report said party members plan to educate rural people about the riots and give them ``patriotic education.'' They will show videos and pictures, invite those involved in the riots to talk and hold denunciation sessions of the Dalai Lama, it said.

The campaign is called ``Oppose splittism, Protect stability, Encourage development,'' the newspaper said.

Earlier this month China vowed to ramp up a campaign requiring Tibetan Buddhist monks to denounce the Dalai Lama and declare their loyalty to Beijing, part of so-called ``patriotic education'' campaigns that have been in place for more than a decade and are believed to have fueled protests by monks in Tibet and other Tibetan areas of China.
