Chile to increase cooperation with India

Chile would increase cooperation with India in many areas, including infrastructure and IT, said a top industry official from the South American country.

NEW DELHI: Chile would increase cooperation with India in many areas, including infrastructure and IT, said a top industry official from the South American country.

"We would increase cooperation in areas of education, infrastructure, IT and banking besides working on ways to enhance trade and investment in both the countries," Chilean association Fudacion Pais Digital Claudia CEO Bobadilla said at a CII seminar on 'Business Opportunities in Chile and India' here.

Bobadilla said Chile has signed trade agreements with the EU, China, Japan and the US and is looking forward to signing Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with India, Malaysia, Vietnam and Columbia.

India signed a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Chile in 2006 aimed at increasing bilateral trade, especially in areas like textile, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

"We hope the PTA would soon be upgraded to a proper FTA," she said.

Chilean Fudacion Pais Digital also signed an MoU with the Confederation of Industry to cooperate in the areas of industrial and technological advancement.

A 45-member delegation from Chile, comprising government officials and industry leaders, is on a week-long visit to India.

"We believe India is an example for us and we want to take away best experiences from it," Bobadilla said.

Trade between India and Chile has increased from 163.68 million dollars in 1996-97 to 582.60 million dollars in 2005-06.
