Chief secretary-led panel probing bulldozer action in Batardraba: Assam Govt

The Assam government has informed the Gauhati High court that a chief secretary-headed committee was enquiring into the bulldozing of the houses of the accused who had set a police station on fire last year.

It also assured appropriate action against the erring officers within 15 days.

Chief Justice RM Chhaya asked the state to pay compensation to the victims.


Blaming the police for the death of a fish trader, Safikul Islam, a mob had set on fire the Batardraba police station in the Nagaon district. Three police personnel were injured in the incident.

After that, on May 22, the houses of the accused were razed to the ground.

A public interest litigation was filed in the HC, challenging the action. "Upon such assurance and in view of the fact that the state is now seized of the matter, it is expected that the state shall also take appropriate decisions for compensating the persons affected by the illegal action of the officer," the court said.
