Chidambaram, Mukherjee have done nothing wrong: Congress

Congress on Monday said neither Home Minister P Chidambaram nor Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has done anything wrong.

NEW DELHI: In an apparent balancing act following the fresh controversy on 2-G allocation issue, Congress on Monday said neither Home Minister P Chidambaram nor Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has done anything wrong.

"We are with the Home Minister. I don't think the Home Minister has done anything wrong," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters here.

He was asked about the Finance Ministry note suggesting that the 2G spectrum could have been auctioned had then Finance Minister Chidambaram insisted, which has triggered a political storm.

Asked whether Mukherjee has "done anything wrong", Alvi said "absolutely not".

He said the party supported the statement of Law Minister Salman Khurshid that even if all parts of the note are believed to be correct, "the inferences drawn are not correct."

Khurshid had also insisted that the note was actually a "summary" and the concerned official had given his opinion over and above the summary in the note.

"People give their opinion over and above the summary. The importance of the opinion will be seen when the issue is discussed," he said.
