Underworld don Chhota Rajan sentenced to seven years in jail

NEW DELHI: A special CBI Court here has sentenced underworld don Chhota Rajan to seven years of imprisonment in a fake passport case.

This is Rajan’s first conviction in an Indian Court. The Court has held him guilty of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. Besides Rajan, three former officials of Regional Passport office (RPO), Bangalore have also been imprisoned for seven years by the Court. The three are Jayashree Rahate; Deepak Natvarlal and Lalitha Laxamanan.

A case against Rajan was registered on October 31, 2015 and the public servants on charges of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.


CBI had arrested Rajan on November 6, 2015 after his deportation from Indonesia and he remained in police custody till November 19, 2015. He is currently in judicial custody at Tihar Jail. It was established that Rajan dishonestly & fraudulently in criminal conspiracy with officials of Passport office got issued a fake Indian Passport on January 1, 1998 in the name of Mohan Kumar.

Rajan on the basis of said Passport, fraudulently got issued another passport dated December 19, 2003 from High commission of India at Harare, Zimbabwe and other passport from Consulate General of India, Sydney (Australia). Rajan had stayed in Zimbabwe and Australia in the fake identity of Mohan Kumar on the strength of said passport (fraudulently issued from RPO Bangalore).
