Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, YSRCP chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, and BRS working president KT Rama Rao attended the wedding reception of YS Anil Reddy's daughter.
Anil is a cousin of Jagan. And his daughter's wedding became a talking point after the three leaders walked up to the dais together to bless the newlywed couple.
Jagan and KTR were accompanied by their wives, while Vijay attended with actor Trisha. Industrialist Gautam Adani was also present on the dais at the same time, adding another dimension to the gathering. Adani has frequently featured in Congress's attacks on the BJP, with the party questioning his alleged proximity to the ruling dispensation.
The gathering has offered political observers plenty to discuss, given the leaders' differing political positions and equations in their respective states. Three leaders sat together and interacted also.
While they are not direct electoral rivals, operating as they do in different states, they are not necessarily on the same side of the political divide either. Vijay's TVK is allied with the Congress, which is in power in Telangana and is the principal political opponent of the BRS. Similarly, Jagan's sister YS Sharmila heads the Congress in Andhra Pradesh, with whom he has family issues.
Jagan and KTR have shared cordial relations over the years. However, Vijay's alliance with the Congress complicates any broader understanding involving the BRS, while Jagan remains at odds with the Congress leadership in Andhra Pradesh.Of late, however, Jagan's political positions on several national issues have appeared to converge with those of the Congress, despite their differences in Andhra Pradesh.
The gathering does not necessarily signal the beginning of a political alliance. The timing, however, is interesting as the DMK is exploring a political formation outside both the NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc and has reached out to different political formations.
The three states together account for 81 Lok Sabha seats, offering an interesting numerical proposition. But translating that arithmetic into political influence would require sustained coordination and a shared agenda.
