Chennai reports over 1000 cases again, ending six day streak; TN Governor tests negative

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's state capital, Chennai registered over 1,000 cases for the first time since August 8.

This came just as the TN Governor tested negative, hospital authorities confirmed on Friday evening.

The city which has been the worst affected in the state registered 1,187 cases on Friday, the state media bulletin confirmed. It had maintained a six-day streak where the number of cases remained under the 1,000 mark, providing some relief.


As many as 5,890 people tested positive for the infection Friday, taking the total tally to 3,26,245 in the state.

The number of deaths was marginally lower at 117 as opposed to 119 on Thursday, which happens to be the highest single-day spike in deaths that the State has witnessed so far.

The state’s total Covid-19 related fatalities stands at 5,514, according to the media bulletin.

Chengalpet and Thiruvallur continued to have a high number of cases with over 400 people testing positive while other districts like Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Theni had more than 300 cases. Cuddalore too reported 221 cases on Friday.

Testing remained high with 68,301 being tested for Covid-19 on Friday.

The number of recoveries stood at 5,556, taking the total count of recoveries to 2,67,015 in the state.
