Chennai police may register case against Modi

Chennai Police may register a case against suspended IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi for not responding to summons issued by them, but said they would wait for some more days.

CHENNAI: Chennai Police may register a case against suspended IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi for not responding to summons issued by them, but said they would wait for some more days.

"We will wait for few more days and see how many (of the accused) appear for enquiry and take action later," senior police officials said.

Modi could face a case under Section 172 of the IPC (absconding to avoid service of summons or other proceeding), they said.

BCCI secretary N Srinivasan had lodged a complaint against Modi, charging him with misappropriation of Rs 470 crore, mainly related to alloting media rights and free commercial rights.

Police officials said the others have accepted the summons issued to them last month and investigators would wait as police had given time till January seven.

On Tuesday, summons issued by police to Modi had returned as 'refused.' Police had sent them to his Mumbai address though he is presently staying in London, as that was the "known address" of the suspended IPL Commissioner.

Besides Modi, the others summoned by the Central Crime Branch are Kunal Dasgupta, Venu Nair, Andrew Georgio, Seamus O'brien, Harish Krishnamachar and Ajay Verma in connection with the complaint filed by Srinivasan.

They had been summoned under CrPC Sections 91 (to produce documents or other things) and 160 (power to require attendance of witnesses).

The CCB had registered a case in October against Modi and the others under different sections, including criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, falsification of accounts and cheating.

As part of its probe, police had sought details from Board of Control for Cricket in India on the series of meetings between BCCI and IPL and its minutes.
