Chennai floods: About 1500 passengers, 2000 airport staff stranded at airport

Chennai floods: About 1500 passengers, 2000 airport staff stranded at airport
NEW DELHI: About 1500 passengers and 2000 airport/airline staff stranded at the Chennai airport, which is shut due to water logging on the aero side.

"People can not leave because the road outside the airport is submerged in knee deep water. We have arranged for 6 buses to evacuate passengers and will be able to do so by 16.30 today," said a senior AAI official, who did not want to be identified.

The airport in Chennai is shut since 2000 hours yesterday after the runway was submerged with water forcing the authorities to cancel flight operations.

"We have further shut the airport till 6AM tomorrow and a notice has been issued," said the official.

Due to the closure of te airport, 66 arrivals and 53 departures have been impacted till 12.30 PM today. About 30 aircraft of various airlines are stuck at Chennai airport since last night.

A senior civil aviation ministry said that Turupati is the nearest airport from Chennai and is likely to be used to send relief and support to the city.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in view of the situation, the Centre has deployed Army, Navy and NDRF teams in sufficient numbers. "The Prime Minister has issued a memorandum and we have deployed our Central team there to assess the situation and make a report so that every possible help can also reach there," Singh said.

The rains that have virtually broken a 100-year-old record with one day's rainfall covering a month's average have flooded areas in Vadapalani, Valasaravakkam and Nandamvakkam as nearby lakes overflowed into the city.
