The airport in Chennai is shut since 2000 hours yesterday after the runway was submerged with water forcing the authorities to cancel flight operations.
"We have further shut the airport till 6AM tomorrow and a notice has been issued," said the official.
Due to the closure of te airport, 66 arrivals and 53 departures have been impacted till 12.30 PM today. About 30 aircraft of various airlines are stuck at Chennai airport since last night.
A senior civil aviation ministry said that Turupati is the nearest airport from Chennai and is likely to be used to send relief and support to the city.
