Chemistry degree helps in getting poli chemistry right: CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh believes that a degree in chemistry subject helps in understanding the "political chemistry" of the coalition government better.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh believes that a degree in chemistry subject helps in understanding the "political chemistry" of the coalition government better.

Deshmukh, who himself is a chemistry graduate and runs the coalition government in the state, was speaking at the function to kick off golden jubilee celebrations of Sathaye College in suburban Vile Parle on Saturday.

After one of the speakers mentioned in his speech that the Chief Minister was a chemistry graduate, Deshmukh said, "Indeed I am a chemistry graduate, but nowadays I concentrate more on political chemistry."

Drawing guffaws, he added, "Since I run a coalition government, knowledge of chemistry comes in handy."

Deshmukh, who is facing a challenge to his post from Congress leader Narayan Rane, however, did not say anything about the chemistry with his disgruntled party colleague.

While talking about the spread of education across the state, Deshmukh referred to success of students from Latur, his hometown, in 10th and 12th standard board exams.

But continuing in lighter vein, he said the area was backward otherwise, but not "politically backward."

The Chief Minister also took a dig at Vinod Tawde, BJP general secretary, who is an alumnus of Sathaye College.

"My friend Tawde has a vast experience, from which the college will surely benefit. This experience helped him get re-elected to the legislative council this time," Deshmukh said, in apparent reference to Sena-BJP's success in eating into Congress votes in the recent MLC elections.
