NEW DELHI: BJP has blamed a political conspiracy behind the charges slapped on its Rajasthan leader Gulab Chand Kataria in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, saying this is the third instance of the government misusing CBI against its leaders.

Dismissing the charges against Kataria, BJP said at a press conference that the agency had similarly targeted former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah and Rajasthan MLA Rajendra Rathore. The party has pointed to CBI chief Ranjit Sinha’s statement in ET as evidence that the agency is working under the pressure.

Sinha had said it would be difficult to prove ex-railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s involvement in the cash-for-jobs scam.

BJP president Rajnath Singh described the charge sheet against Kataria as a well-thought-out conspiracy to defame the BJP leaders. Arun Jaitley, the leader of the opposition in the RS, said in the case of Rajendra Rathore, too, no evidence was found. Rathore was sought to be implicated in the fake encounter of liquor smuggler Dara Singh. The Attorney General said on May 27, 2011 that more evidence should be collected and only then it should be considered that whether he should be added as an accused, he said.
