Charanjit Singh Channi to be the captain of Punjab. Here is all you should know about the new CM

After long suspense over the name of new Punjab Chief Minister, Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi has been announced as the next chief minister of the state today.

News of Channi's appointment by the Congress came as a surprise as Sukhjinder Randhawa's name as the new CM was doing rounds in the media reports.

"It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. #CharanjitSinghChanni has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab," former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat tweeted.


Here is all you should know about the new Punjab Chief Minister:

• Channi, 49, was born in the village Makrona Kalan near Chamkaur Sahib. Later in his life his family settled in Kharar, where he was the municipal councilor for three terms and moved on to become the President for two more.
• Channi is the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab.
• He has served as Punjab cabinet minister for technical education and industrial training, employment generation, and also science and technology.
• He is a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib constituency.
• The Congress leader was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the first time in 2007. He repeated the success in the 2012 and 2017 elections.
• Channi has also served as the leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2015 to 2016.
• Channi was among the state leaders who had raised a banner of revolt against Captain Amarinder Singh.
