Change in strategy: Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is new president of BJP’s Assam unit

GUWAHATI: What is seen as the fallout of Bihar election debacle of BJP, the Saffron party has changed its strategy and appointed a new state unit president of Assam BJP. Assam is going to polls next year.

Union sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have replaced Siddhartha Bhattacharya as the state unit president. Bhattacharya is assigned new assignment of spokesperson of the party for Northeast India.

BJP has also constituted election management committee. Sonowal will head the committee.

There has been growing factionalism in state BJP. There has been growing exodus of leaders from Congress and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to BJP.

Lok Sabha MP from Tezpur R.P Sarma recently has engaged in verbal duel with Bhattacharya in social networking sites.

Sarma on Saturday said, “The announcement of Sonowal as the president on Saturday is one of the happiest day of my life.”

Sonowal said that in his new role he will ensure that party reaches out to the people in the state.
