Chandrayanaa-I, a stepping stone for Mars mission

Chandrayanaa-I would demonstrate the country's capabilities in leading a major space mission and would be a stepping stone for the Mars planetary mission, project director M Annadurai said on Satarday.

CHENNAI: Chandrayanaa-I would demonstrate the country's capabilities in leading a major space mission and would be a stepping stone for the Mars planetary mission, project director M Annadurai said on Satarday.

Delivering a lecture on "Engineering aspects of Chandrayanaa-I" at the IIT here, he said the next project Chandrayana-II might be aimed at targeting other planets from the Moon, which would depend on the experience gained by Chandrayanaa-I.

Contrasting Chandrayanaa-I from the earlier missions to the Moon, he said the earlier ones concentrated on areas near the Equator of the moon, while the Indian project was aimed at studying the lunar polar ice.

"The Indian mission will establish the aspects of lunar polar ice and will be useful for deep space communication," he said.

Annadurai said Moon missions were generally taken up to study the possibilities of mining, since it's surface was rich in helium, useful for generating atomic energy. Besides, the Moon could be used as a base for further space voyages and scientists were exploring possibilities of taking people to it

In Chandrayanaa-I, scientists would be observing the Moon from 100 km polar arbitrary path for a two-year period from April 2008 to December 2010, he said.

Spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence techniques would be used for chemical mapping of the Moon and instruments for lunar laser ranging form a major part of the device.
