Champai Soren's entry into the BJP could be a strategic move to counter Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren's efforts to rally tribal support against the party ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, reported TOI.

Despite having former tribal Chief Ministers Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda in its ranks, the BJP has struggled to gain traction in the ST-majority Kolhan region, known for its strong local hero culture. Even Sibu Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and father of the current Chief Minister, faced challenges from local figures like Bagun Sambrai, Nirmal Mahto, and Shailendra Mahto.

According to the TOI report, Champai Soren, often called the "Tiger of Kolhan" by his supporters, has built a loyal following by championing local issues and securing jobs for the youth through TISCO and other local enterprises. The BJP hopes that aligning with Champai will give it a much-needed boost, particularly after failing to win any of the 14 seats in Kolhan during the 2019 elections. The party also suffered setbacks in the Lok Sabha elections, where Hemant Soren successfully framed his ED arrest as an injustice to the tribal community, leading to BJP losses in all five reserved tribal seats.

BJP insiders are optimistic that Champai’s joining could secure the party between eight to ten seats in Kolhan, enhancing its prospects in the upcoming state elections, noted TOI. Although Champai is reportedly joining the party without conditions, his influence is expected to be significant, especially in candidate selection in Kolhan. His longstanding connection with the JMM, where he was a trusted aide of Sibu Soren, adds to his political leverage.

The JMM is reportedly concerned about Champai’s departure, TOI said in its report. The party has not acted against him, despite his previous criticism of the JMM leadership for allegedly mistreating him and forcing him to step down as chief minister.
