Centre's nod to two city NURM projects soon
Mumbai’s infrastructure projects have finally made some progress with the Centre.
MUMBAI: Mumbai’s infrastructure projects have finally made some progress with the Centre. A senior Maharashtra government officer told ET that the Centre is likely to sanction two major infrastructure projects within two-three days under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM).
“The Rs 1,600-crore Middle Vaitarana water supply project and Rs 2,376-crore Mumbai sewage disposal project are likely to be sanctioned within two-three days only. The Cabinet committee on economic affairs has cleared the projects and so has the planning commission,” the official said.
Senior officials from Maharashtra were called for a meeting by the planning commission and Union urban development ministry officials on Thursday to discuss seven infrastructure proposals submitted by the state government for Mumbai.
“We had a very positive discussion on all the projects. All the proposals have made a significant progress at the union government level and we will see things moving ahead very fast in a couple of weeks,” an official who attended the meeting said.
The planning commission has also agreed for an independent funding for Mumbai’s key infrastructure project, the Rs 1,800-crore Brimstowad (Brihanmumbai storm water drains) upgradation project, other than the seven NURM proposals, sources said.
“The planning commission also shared our point of view that maximum funding for Brimstowad should be arranged as the project is key to Mumbai’s infrastructure overhaul,” he said. The Brimstowad project proposes a complete upgradation of the island city’s storm-water drains that would prevent water-logging and flooding for twenty-five years. Maharashtra officials said the Brimstowad project had got technical clearance from the centre.
The other projects that got a big push on Thursday include the Rs 1,298-crore plan for development and protection of Mithi River and the first phase of Mumbai metro rail estimated to cost Rs 12,662 crore.
“The Mithi river project is awaiting environmental clearance. The project has a hearing on Friday on its environmental aspects and hopefully will get clearance after that. We will send a fresh proposal revising the earlier project note with an environmental point of view. The proposal would then be considered by the technical experts at the Centre,” an official said.
