NEW DELHI: A meeting of the Union Cabinet has been convened on Monday to take a decision on imposing Presidents rule. The state governor had recommended central intervention in the wake of political turmoil.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, who returned from a foreign tour on Sunday evening, is learnt to be against imposition of Presidents rule. Sources said the government will take a formal view on the matter at Mondays meeting.

Governor Syed Sibtey Razi had sent a report to the government on Friday recommending central rule and putting the assembly under suspended animation.

Mr Razi is understood to have cited political instability in the state for making his recommendation following the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led coalition failing to reach a consensus on a new chief minister. No other political formation has either come forward to stake claim to form an alternative government.

Shibu Soren had named party MLA Champai Soren as his successor, which was rejected by his allies Congress, RJD and independent MLAs supporting the coalition.

JMM supremo Shibu Soren had stepped down on as chief minister on January 12 after losing an assembly by-election. It was mandatory for Mr Shibu Soren to become a member of the legislative assembly to remain chief minister.
