Centre to take action against wage board violators
Government on Wednesday assured a journalists union that their demand for an amendment to the Working Journalists Act will be "suitably" addressed.
"If there is need for an amendment to the 1958 Act, it will not be opposed. We will address the issue to bring the amount of penalty imposed on the management for failing to implement recommendations of the wage board to the present level," Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandez said on Wednesday.
The 'Indian Journalists Union' put forth a demand in this regard at a meeting they had with the minister.
"I understand at the present level any management finds it much easier to pay a Rs 500 per day penalty than implement the increase in wages as recommended by the board," he told the National Executive of the Indian Journalists Union.
The minister also said the demand for an increased rate of interest on the provident fund (PF) will be addressed by roping in more than one agency to manage the fund.
"We have decided to bring in four agencies to manage the investment of the employees provident fund including the State Bank of India, which hitherto was the only party managing it," the minister said.
Besides, to eliminate the delay in investment, which results in loss of money, the government will also impose a penalty on the agency concerned in case of delay.
"The firms handling the PF will not be allowed to keep the funds with them, a delay in investment by more than two days will invite penalty," he said.
