SILIGURI: The Centre would consider changing Sino-India border trade through Nathu La in Sikkim into an open exchange to help northern part of West Bengal get benefits of export and import between the two countries, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said on Monday.

Addressing a meeting of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries of North Bengal (FOCIN), Ramesh said to make it an open trade, the West Bengal government officials and members of the chamber would be involved as desired by the state Chief Minister.

If everything remains normal and the open trade became a reality, the number of items for export and import with China would also increase, the minister said.

General Secretary of FOCIN, Biswajit Das said that Ramesh had also assured to open Fulbari, on Siliguri-Jalpaiguri road, as a trade route to Bangladesh which was a long standing demand of the Federation and businessmen in the region.

The works for infrastructure development at Fulbari would start soon, Das said quoting the minister.
