Centre to mobilise more funds for urban renewal mission

The Centre would mobilise more funds to take up various developmental works under the JNNURM in the country, Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said.

CHENNAI: The Centre would mobilise more funds to take up various developmental works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the country, Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said today.

Laying the foundation stone for a Rs 23.30 crore-drinking water project at suburban Maduravayal here, he said the Rs one lakh crore set aside for the JNNURM was not sufficient as urbanisation was taking place in a brisk manner in the country.

Lauding the Tamil Nadu Government for taking up various developmental works under the JNNURM, he said the state was the most progressive state in the country with 44 per cent of the population living in urban areas.

He said the Centre had already sanctioned 28 projects in Maduari, Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu at a total cost of Rs 2,587 crore under the JNNURM.

"Apart from concentrating on major cities like Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, the JNNURM will also focus on small and meduim towns in the country," he said adding the Centre had allotted 97 schemes worth Rs 706 crore for small and medium towns in the country.

"We have sanctioned 24 projects, worth Rs 2,134 crore, to build houses for the urban poor,"he added.
