MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that it was unfortunate that Ambedkar was not known as much as Martin Luther King and said that the Centre would do its best to ensure that Ambedkar is known worldwide for his work to lift the backward and the downtrodden people. "He is the leader of the whole country and not just of the Dalits," said Modi.

Modi also detailed the work done by the Centre and BJP-ruled states in making various memorials of Dr Am bedkar in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and London.

In his speech, the Prime Minister specially mentioned the good work done by BJP ministers from the state. He mentioned roads minister Nitin Gadkari, Mahrashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and railway minister Suresh Prabhu. The PM said that Gadkari has done in 15 months what could not be done in the last 15 years. He spoke of how 15 km of roads were being constructed per day in the country. Modi also praised Fadnavis for his water conservation projects.
