Centre should fine-tune intelligence sharing: BJP

The BJP has called for sharing of credible intelligence report by the Centre with the states.

NEW DELHI: A day after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi described the routine messages from the Centre forewarning terror strikes as weather reports which are generally vague in nature, the BJP has called for sharing of credible intelligence report by the Centre with the states.

Calling for a co-ordinated effort by the central and state governments to fight terrorists and pre-empt terror strikes, the Bharatiya Janata Party requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to call a meeting of chief ministers to discuss imminent internal security concerns, in the aftermath of the Jaipur blasts.

The main Opposition party insisted that it was not trading political charges but simply drawing attention to the need for proper co-ordination between the Centre and states irrespective of political divide.

Stressing on the need to share specific information, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, Sharing credible intelligence is required because the conspiracy is not only state specific but national in character with international links wherein citizens of all faiths and innocents are brutally killed.

The BJP reiterated Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje contention that no credible or specific information on possible terror attacks was shared with the states. When asked if the state had been tipped off by central intelligence agencies, Ms Raje said that there were only general alerts and no specific information.

The BJP sought to make a distinction between routine sharing of information by the Centre and its intelligence agencies and sharing credible information on a specific incident. State and Centre should work together.

Many of these terror organisations have international linkages, the Central intelligence agencies have access to intercepts, email messages and so on. Such information that comes to central intelligence agencies should be shared with the states, the BJP spokesperson said.

The argument being that if intelligence collection is effective and accurate, there can be pre-emptive strikes against terrorist groups rather.

A sentiment that Mr Modi articulated in his letter to the PM as well. Suggesting that pre-emptive strikes would be more desirable than resorting to investigations after the terrorist attack, the Gujarat CM said the need for a national consensus for a zero-tolerance against terrorism and necessary political will to fight terrorism.
