NEW DELHI: The central government moved the Supreme Court on Friday seeking an urgent stay on the Uttarakhand High Court order that had set aside President's rule in the state. This had led to the restoration of the Harish Rawat government, which will have to prove its majority in a floor test on April 29.

"We are pressing for an urgent stay," attorney general Mukul Rohatgi told a bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and Shivakirti Singh. "How can you act on a judgement, a copy of which is not available," he said. The Supreme Court bench directed that the appeal be first placed before the chief justice, a procedural hitch that has to be overcome if it is to be heard today.
