Centre reviews situation
The Centre on Thursday reviewed the law and order situation in Rajasthan, where violent protests by Gurjars continue, focusing on availability of central forces to aid the state police as well as protection of railway properties in the state from ...
At the hour-long emergency meeting chaired by Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta and attended by director generals of BSF, CRPF and Railway Protection Force (RPF), besides senior intelligence officials, the security scenario in the various affected districts of the state was assessed and the efforts of the Vasundhara Raje government to quell the violence reviewed.
The availability of paramilitary forces to aid the state police in maintenance of law and order was assessed with the help of DGs of the various forces. The Centre, it may be recalled, has already spared over 23 companies of Central forces, besides armed police personnel of various states, for the purpose. The possibility of sending additional reinforcements, when required, was discussed.
Even as the Centre monitored the situation in the desert state, Dausa MP Sachin Pilot called on Union home minister Shivraj Patella at his residence in the afternoon. Mr Pilot, who is a Gurjar himself, is said to have reiterated his demand for imposition of President’s rule in Rajasthan.
The Centre, at the morning meeting chaired by Mr Gupta, was particularly concerned at the damage to the railway properties in Rajasthan in the wake of the agitation by the Gurjar community. Tracks were uprooted by the protesters in various places on Thursday, forcing the railway authorities to cancel and reschedule several trains, throwing rail traffic out of gear. The RPF was particularly asked to be extra vigilant so that no harm came either to the railway stations or rail properties, including trains.
Mr Gupta, who also held a video-conferencing session with the Rajasthan chief secretary and DGP, is said to have stressed the need for close coordination between the state government and central forces so as to ensure effective and optimum use of the latter.
On Wednesday, the Centre had issued advisories not only to Rajasthan but also to the neighbouring states of Delhi, UP and Haryana — also having a sizeable Gurjar population — to guard against spreading of the pro-quota violence. The advisory to the Rajasthan government called for initiation of talks with the community leaders to enlist their help in restoring peace.
