Centre objects to states having different wages

The Centre on Monday strongly objected to some State Governments having different set of wages for schemes under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and other development programmes.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday strongly objected to some State Governments having different set of wages for schemes under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and other development programmes.
The minimum wages should be similar to the wages paid to agricultural labours for unskilled workers and must be at par with payment made for other development works carried out by other government agencies, Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said.
Speaking at a Review Meeting of State Rural Development Secretaries here, he said State Governments cannot have a different set of wages for NREGA and other developmental programmes.
He said there should be no discrimination on gender basis over payment of wages and the amount to be paid should be on the basis of work actually done.
The Minister said wages being paid under NREGA must be in conformity with minimum wages fixed under the Minimum Wages Act and added that there could not be a different wage structure for NREGA work.
He also said there should be judicious use of Central grants to states.
