Gogoi said in a statement here, "Construction of big dams will adversely affect downstream areas of Assam and the north-east region and I fail to comprehend why the Centre is not taking the matter seriously despite knowing this fact."

Gogoi further said that he had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up with China the issue of construction of dams on the Brahmaputra during Modi's recent visit to the neighbouring country.
