Centre forms panel for new Sethu route

The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court it has set up a six-member expert committee to examine the feasibility of pushing of the Sethusamudram Project through an alternative alignment to save Ram Sethu.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court it has set up a six-member expert committee to examine the feasibility of pushing of the Sethusamudram Project through an alternative alignment to save Ram Sethu. The panel will also comprise two special invitees from Tamil Nadu government, it said.

���The committee will quickly examine the feasibility of the alternative alignment suggested by the hon���able Supreme Court for the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project between Dhanushkodi and Lands End on Rameshwaram island keeping in view the technical aspects, cost benefit analysis, social and cultural impact, environmental impact, law & order aspect and any other related matters,��� said government in its order.

The panel headed by noble laureate IPCC chairman RK Pachauri will also comprise two members from the state of Tamil Nadu as special invitees. These will be Dr N Sundaradevan, principal secretary (environment & forests), government of Tamil Nadu and Mr R Kirtoshkumar, collector of Ramanathapuram district of the DMK ruled state, said the Centre.

It further said, ���The committee will be serviced by the department of shipping���.

Besides Dr Pachauri, the committee will also comprise Dr T Chakrabarti, acting director of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institution (NEERI) Nagpur; Mr SS Sherye, director of the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa; Dr S Kathiroli, director of the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai; Real Admiral BR Rao, Chief Hydrogrpher to the Government of India and Shri PM Tajae, director general of the Geological Survey of India, Kolkata.

The government said that the constitution of such committee was in pursuance of the observations made by the apex court on July 23.

���The suggestion of Supreme Court for alternative alignment, including a canal cutting through the portion between Dhanushkodi and Land End on Rameshwaram Island, has been given serious consideration by the government���, said cabinet secretary KM Chandrashekhar in a letter addressed to Centre���s advocate and senior counsel Fali S Nariman annexed with government���s order dated July 29.

According to the letter, ���The committee has been asked to submit its report as quickly as possible���.

A bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, Justice RV Raveendran and Justice JM Panchal had said that the issue of faith has to be addressed asking the Centre to look into whether it was feasible to save the revered structure and work out on other alignments for execution of the project. ���This issue has to be worked out. Whether it is practically and politically feasible?��� Justice Raveendran had said. At this Nariman had said that he will address the matter to the top level of the government.
