Centre declares drought in Manipur

Scanty monsoon has forced the Centre to declare a drought in Northeastern state of Manipur. In Assam, at least 14 districts out of the 27 districts are declared to be reeling under drought like situation.

GUWAHATI: Scanty monsoon has forced the Centre to declare a drought in Northeastern state of Manipur. In Assam, at least 14 districts out of the 27 districts are declared to be reeling under drought like situation.

Normal rainfall has eluded Northeast with Manipur leading the pack. From June 1 to July 14 this year, against the normal rainfall of 388.1 mm, the state has received merely 106.8 mm, facing a deficiency of around 72%.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati in Assam has seen a deviation of around 32% rainfall from the normal rainfall. Similarly Meghalaya has a deviation of 51%, Arunachal Pradesh 22%, Nagaland 54% and Tripura 29%.

Almost all the district in the Manipur is hit by drought. "The Manipur government has declared that all the districts in the state is drought affected," minister of state for agriculture K V Thomas said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Manipur is a rice growing state. The dry spell in Assam has hit the agriculture and production of tea. Prices of green leaf is sky rocketing.

In Assam, the state government has asked deputy commissioners to draw up an action plan for supply of drinking water, fodder, irrigation etc in dry areas to deal with the situation effectively.

All the concerned departments particularly department of agriculture, irrigation and public health are asked to initiate necessary steps to deal with the situation.

In Assam, districts including Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, KarbiAnglong, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagoan and Sivsagar are facing drought-like situation.
