Centre appoints Tushar Mehta as special public prosecutor for 2G appeal

In a major development, the Central government has appointed Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta as the special public prosecutor to conduct and handle appeals pertaining the 2G spectrum appeal.

The agency, earlier this week, had written to the special public prosecutor, Anand Grover to supply the draft copy of the appeal. The agency had underlined the need to expedite the filing of appeal in the High Court. The agency, in its letter written to Grover, had argued that despite the Centre giving a go-ahead to file an appeal in the High Court on January 17, the public prosecutor had not supplied the complete copy of the draft appeal.

As per available information, Grover had supplied grounds of appeal, in parts, to the agency for approval. He had given a strong opinion, running into 15 pages, to challenge the 2G verdict which had acquitted former Telecom Minister A Raja and others in the spectrum allocation case. A composite copy of the appeal,however, was yet to be furnished.


The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the notification appointing Tushar Mehta as the special public prosecutor to conduct 2G cases on February 8. ET has reviewed the copy of the notification.

The new appointment is likely to attract attention from the Supreme Court. For, Anand Grover was appointed as special public prosecutor by the Apex Court to conduct 2G trial and related cases.

The special CBI Court had not only slammed the investigative agencies- CBI and ED- while acquitting Raja and others but had also expressed strong disapproval of the agencies prosecution and it's prosecutors.

As per available information, CBI wants the appeal to be filed within this month without any further delay.
