Central govt's response to Assam floods discriminatory, alleges ULFA

Banned outfit Ulfa has termed central government’s attitude towards the flood affected people of Assam as discriminatory.

GUWAHATI: Banned outfit Ulfa has termed central governments attitude towards the flood affected people of Assam as discriminatory. Already Centre governments Rs 1000 Crore relief package to Bihar has snowballed into a major controversy in Assam with couple of organisations attacking chief minister Tarun Gogoi for failing to secure a similar relief package for Assam.

The flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim with the Brahmaputra flowing above danger mark at several places. Assam is reeling under third wave of flood.

ULFA in its mouthpiece, Freedom, said that the central government always meted out a step-motherly treatment to problems of Assam. It is inhuman to discriminate in times of distress. The floods of Assam and Bihar are of similar intensity. Both the states had witnessed the fury of floods. However, the prime minister even cut short his two-day Assam visit when he heard of the floods in Bihar, it stated.

The statement further said that people of Assam too expected that the prime minister would visit the flood affected Majuli and take up immediate measures to save the river island from erosion. However, nothing was done.
ULFA attacked public sector company ONGC for drilling in the vicinity of historical monument Rangghar in Upper Assam. ONGCs seismic survey in Sibsagar district has run into controversy after several organisations alleged that the cracks have surfaced in the Ahom era monument Rang Ghar.

The militant outfit said that it is a planned move of the company at the behest of the government. The government had taken up several projects to beautify the historical monuments in New Delhi for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, however, not a single move was undertaken in Assam to preserve the monuments, which are very important for Assamese identity, alleged the mouthpiece.
