Centenarian CPI-M leader Mohan Lal Chakma dies

A centenarian leader of CPI-M and former MLA Mohan Lal Chakma died at Dhanicherra in North Tripura district, party sources said.

AGARTALA: A centenarian leader of CPI-M and former MLA Mohan Lal Chakma died at Dhanicherra in North Tripura district, party sources said today.

He was 101 and suffering from old age problem for several years, died on Friday night.

Born in Mogchan village in Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT), now in Bangladesh, Chakma was a school teacher in Rangamati district in the hill tract and in 1947 he fought for inclusion of the CHT with Indian territory.

Enraged by his political activities, the then East Pakistan authorities issued arrest warrant against him and he fled to Tripura.

He obtained the membership of CPI-M in 1973 and became an MLA in 1978 when the first Left Front Government headed by Nripen Chakraborty was formed.

He was also the Secretary of the Divisional Committee of Kanchanpur in North Tripura district.
