Celebration in Srinagar, curfew in Jammu
It was a study in contrast on Tuesday: Srinagar celebrated cancellation of the order granting land to the Amarnath trust, but the situation in Jammu turned grave leading to imposition of curfew.
At least three people were injured in firing, besides 40 others in stone pelting on Tuesday, the second day of the anti-Vohra strike sponsored by BJP and its allies.
From the same localities where cops burst hundreds of tear-gas shells, sound of fire crackers could be heard. Many parts of the city witnessed reopening of shops. Grocery stores had huge crowds waiting outside.
However, earlier in the day, there was violence even in the Valley. Not ready to give up the protest till the formal order, the last day of strike saw one more killing, in Budgam, bringing the total death toll to five. Police, while tackling a procession in Budgam town, cane-charged and fired several rounds in the air.
One of the tear-gas shells landed in a house and hit a 45-year-old man who was killed instantly. There were massive protests across Kashmir as scores of trucks carrying protesters from various districts to Srinagar were intercepted by police, wherein 33 people, including cops, were injured.
Reports from Jammu said scores of protesters came out from different localities and clashed with cops. At least at four places cops had to open fire, where in three protesters were injured. Officials said 90 people were injured during the day as police detained over 70 activists.
A number of cops were wounded in brick-batting. In Jammu town, there were demonstrations by Muslim groups against the land order. Owing to serious law and order situation, not a single vehicle could move towards Srinagar from Jammu, reports said. VHP has called for a nationwide strike on July 3.
