NEW DELHI: CCTV cameras will be installed at 983 railway stations under the Nirbhaya Fund to ensure safety of women passengers, the Rajya Sabha was told today.

The stations have been included in the proposal for provision of CCTV cameras under the fund, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.

He said the exercise will be taken up as per availability of fund.

In addition, closed-circuit television cameras have been provided at 344 stations and instructions have been issued to zonal railways for extending the use of CCTVs for monitoring cleanliness activities performed by the cleaning staff.

The fund was set up following an announcement in the 2013 Union Budget after the brutal gangrape of a Delhi girl on December 16, 2012, that had sparked a nationwide outrage.

It is created to support initiatives by the government and NGOs working towards protecting the dignity and ensuring safety of women in India.
