CCS takes stock of security in South Asian region
The security scenario in the South Asian region in the wake of the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was on Friday reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The situation in the region as well as in the domestic front came up for a close scrutiny at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), PM's Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru told reporters.
The hour-long CCS meeting was followed by a meeting of leaders of major political parties where National Security Adviser M K Narayanan briefed them on the basis of whatever information was available on the incident and the situation in the region.
They were also apprised of the steps taken by the government to deal with the situation, he said.
Baru said that the Prime Minister, who returned from Goa this afternoon, drove straight to the Pakistan High Commission from the airport to sign the condolence register.
Hailing Bhutto as South Asia's "outstanding" political leader committed to the cause of democracy, Singh wrote: "It was with the deepest sense of horror ans sorrow that I learnt of the tragic demise of Madam Benazir Bhutto."
"In her sad and untimely demise, Pakistan and South Asia have lost an outstanding political leader who was passionately committed to the cause of moderation, democracy and, peace and friendship between our two countries," he wrote.
