CBI to examine IPS officer D G Vanzara's resignation letter

NEW DELHI: The CBI on Thursday said it will examine contents of the resignation letter of jailed IPS officer D G Vanzara, who had quit recently after slamming Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in connection with its probe in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

"We will examine contents of Vanzara's resignation letter and see whether any fresh leads can be pursued from it," CBI Director Ranjit Sinha told reporters here.

He said the probe in the fake encounter case was already in the final phase and another charge sheet would be filed soon. "We have already sought time from the court to file supplementary charge sheet in the case. We are hopeful that we will be able to finish the probe soon," he said.

Vanzara had on Monday tendered his resignation letter and accused Modi-led BJP government in Gujarat of failing to protect its "loyal soldiers". However, his resignation was not accepted by the State government.

59-year-old Vanzara, who is a 1987 batch IPS officer and a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) rank officer, was considered close to Modi.

He is lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail since 2007 after his arrest in connection with alleged fake encounter killing of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh. He was subsequently made prime accused in the alleged encounter deaths of Sohrabuddin's associate Tulsiram Prajapati, Mumbai resident Ishrat Jahan and three others.

After all these encounters police had claimed those killed were terrorists on a mission to assassinate Modi.
