CBI seeks more time from HC to for housing scam cases

Seeking more time to complete investigations, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that it has filed chargesheets in 137 FIRs in connection with the co-operative group housing society scam.

NEW DELHI: Seeking more time to complete investigations, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that it has filed chargesheets in 137 FIRs in connection with the co-operative group housing society scam.

Seeking more time till April 31 to complete the investigation in 65 more cases, the CBI counsel told the Division Bench of Justice Manmohan Sarin and Justice Veena Birbal that out of 252 complaints the agency found no criminal offence in 50 cases.

Of these 40 cases, where the land was allotted to the registered society and in 10 cases where the land has been allotted for the housing society but no construction has been started so far.

Asking friend of court, advocate K C Mittal, to give suggestions on whether societies, against whom no criminality was found, be allowed to proceed with construction or draw of lots.

The court also wanted whether registration of those societies against whom the CBI has filed chargesheets could be cancelled.

The Bench also sought a status report from the bureau about the cases where investigation was to be completed and asked the Registrar Co-operative Group Housing Society (RCGHS) to place the genuine names of those housing societies against which the agency found no irregularity.

Taking suo motu cognisance over the allegation that a racket involving housing societies was going on in Dwaraka area, the Delhi High Court had directed the CBI to investigate the matter.

Former registrar N Diwakar, alleged middleman S P Saxena and some other government officials have been booked for allegedly manipulating records related to existing housing societies and registering new societies in fake names.
