Kolkata horror: CM Mamata writes to PM Modi demands stringent rape laws and fast-track justice
A special court on Thursday allowed CBI to conduct polygraph tests on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and four other doctors in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the hospital, officials said. These doctors were allegedly present with the deceased trainee on the night of her death.

Earlier in the day, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi, seeking a stringent law to deal with incidents of rape and completion of trials in 15 days.

"Such serious and sensitive issues need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner through stringent central legislation, prescribing exemplary punishment against the persons involved in such dastardly crimes. Setting up of fast track special courts for speedy trial in such cases should also be considered in the proposed legislation. To ensure quick justice, trials in such cases should preferably be completed within 15 days," Banerjee wrote in her letter.

According to the available data, nearly 90 rape cases occur daily, Banerjee said. In many cases, the 'victims are murdered'.

Governor CV Ananda Bose met the parents of the deceased medic. Talking of what the deceased's father said, he posted on X: "There are so many fellow doctors and staff. But after my daughter's murder, not even a single person came to my home." He also said even after 13 days, he has not been able to find out who is responsible for his daughter's murder. "Does he not have the right to know this? No one is telling us anything. At least someone should tell him what happened to his daughter that night."

The deceased's father said, "We spoke to the governor about the probe related to our daughter's death. The governor has assured us justice. No result has come."

"Police somehow wanted to burn the body quickly. There was some hurry in everything. Police did not take any steps," he said.
