CBI ready with Bofors burial application

The Bofors burial application is ready. The CBI will on Saturday seek the closure of the Rs 65-crore kickback case at a Delhi court.

NEW DELHI: The Bofors burial application is ready. The CBI will on Saturday seek the closure of the Rs 65-crore kickback case at a Delhi court.

The CBI, which had more than a decade ago claimed credit for accessing the secret Swiss documents, will tell the court on Saturday that the case was not worth pursuing, considering the setbacks its encountered within the country as well as outside. Incidentally, all these setbacks were on account of politically caliberated investigations under the Congress and Congress-friendly governments.

The application finalised by additional solicitor general PP Malhotra will be moved through a public prosecutor before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

The application has cited two judgments during the UPA-I tenure one on Hindujas and the other on defreezing of the London accounts of the Italian middleman Ottavio Quattrocchi.

The application claims that it had left no stone unturned to pursue the case. "The courts in Malaysia and Argentina were approached by the government. But it was thrown out by both the court. In this scenario, no public interest would be served to keep the prosecution in the trial court," the application has stressed.

There have been charges that the CBI did not do even the basic home work while pursuing the case in both Malaysia and Argentina.

But the government could confront problems as a PIL moved by Ajay Agarwal challenging the 2005 High Court judgment is still pending with the Supreme Court.
