NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday carried out searches at the residence of social activist Teesta Setalvad for alleged violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act ( FCRA) in accepting foreign donations without obtaining permission from the home ministry.

The agency also carried out raids at premises owned by her husband Javed Anand, an associate Ghulam Mohammed Peshimam and the offices of Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited (SCPPL) at Mumbai.

CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said Setalvad had not been able to explain the violation of the FCRA. The agency had registered a case after completing verification of documents submitted by the home ministry. It was alleged that SCPPL violated FCRA by accepting a donation of $2.9 lakh from US-based Ford Foundation without getting clearance from the Home Ministry.
